Rolex materials fall into four types: the proprietary Oystersteel, Rolesor (Oystersteel with 18K gold), solid 18K gold, and Rolesium (Oystersteel with 950 platinum). At the same case diameter, the weight in the hand changes a great deal with the material.
Rolex names its own metals and runs its own foundry. This article covers the official names, where each came from, measured weights, and what to check when buying pre-owned.
What Are Rolex Materials? | Oystersteel is from the 904L Family, and Gold is Cast In-House
The stainless steel Rolex uses is not the 316L common in the industry but a more corrosion-resistant 904L-family alloy. Its gold is not bought as bullion: Rolex alloys it in its own foundry. "Oystersteel" is the name for that 904L-family steel.
Everose gold is a proprietary 18K alloy: 75% gold with copper and platinum. Rolesium pairs Oystersteel with a 950 platinum bezel; Rolesor pairs it with 18K gold. When case and bracelet are both 18K gold the watch is "solid gold", in yellow, white or Everose. The Day-Date comes only in 18K gold or 950 platinum, never in steel.

Across the pieces we weighed, the clearest difference is weight. In the same 40mm Daytona, the Oystersteel 116520 is 140.5g and the solid Everose 126505 is 214.1g — 73.6g apart, 1.5 times. In the Submariner Date, where only the material differs, the 126610LN and the Rolesor 126613 are about 16g apart.
Rolesium runs 150.6–151.1g. Only the bezel is platinum, so it sits inside the Oystersteel range (122.0–159.1g) and weight alone will not tell them apart. Every 126610LN we weighed fell between 158.5g and 159.1g, so the same model varies little.
Case diameter moves the figure too. A 36mm solid gold Day-Date is 143.2g — lighter than a 41mm Oystersteel Submariner. Read material and diameter together rather than material alone.

Case and bracelet are Everose gold. The three subdials on the black dial are pink gold too, which shows how far this pink leans red.
The red cast in this pink gold settles against the skin, and works with a light shirt or with black. The reflecting surfaces are wide, so it reads larger than it measures. For anyone who finds steel too plain.
Yacht-Master 126622 | The Only Line Where You Can Choose Rolesium
Rolex Yacht-Master 126622 Pt/SS Bright Blue
The bezel is 950 platinum; case and bracelet are Oystersteel. The numerals are neither printed nor inlaid but raised in mirror polish out of sandblasted platinum.
A white bezel against a blue dial goes with summer clothes, and with navy or grey just as well. It is a sports model, but the lustre is restrained enough for an office. For anyone who finds plain steel too little and gold too much.
3 Points to Consider Before Choosing a Rolex by Material
✓ Decide based on weight whether you can wear it daily
Material shows up first as weight. Steel and solid gold feel different the moment you pick them up. For all-day wear, put weight ahead of colour.
✓ Scratches to look for vary by material
Light scratches hide on steel, solid gold dents at the corners, and a Rolesium bezel goes shiny where it rubs. The material is fixed by the reference suffix, so check the reference rather than the look of the photos.
✓ Do not judge authenticity by material alone
Engravings and colour are clues, but they are not proof on their own. Look also at the finishing, the parts, the accessories, and the shop's inspection and after-sales support.

Q. What is the actual difference between 904L steel and 316L steel?
A. 904L-family steel carries more chromium, nickel and molybdenum than 316L, plus copper, and is said to resist sweat and seawater better. It polishes to a deeper lustre, though it takes more work to machine.
Q. Does Everose gold change color?
A. Ordinary pink gold can lose its red cast because of the copper in it. Everose holds its colour better thanks to the platinum, though scratches and dirt still change how it looks.
Q. What is the difference between Rolesor and Rolesium?
A. Rolesor is Oystersteel with 18K gold; Rolesium is Oystersteel with 950 platinum. Gold reads clearly by colour, but on Rolesium only the bezel is white, so from a distance it looks close to an all-steel watch.
Q. Which models are available in Rolesium?
A. The name is used for the Yacht-Master, and the pieces we carry under it are Yacht-Masters as well. Some Yacht-Masters are Oystersteel only, so the reference is the safest way to tell.
