Fur broadly means animal hair or haired skin. In Japanese fashion, mouton mainly means wool-on sheepskin; shearling is sheep or lamb skin with wool left on.
Faux fur is man-made imitation fur. With these names side by side on product pages, the differences blur, so this article covers materials, care and pre-owned checks.
What is a fur bag|Autumn-winter bags with pile
A fur bag is not one material but any bag using fur all over or in part. Real fur varies in length and sheen by animal, and mouton and shearling count as fur in the broad sense.
Faux fur can look similar, so you cannot judge "long pile = real fur" by looks alone. Check the material label first.
Fur, mouton, shearling and faux fur compared
Comparison|Materials used in fur bags
| Item | Fur | Mouton | Shearling | Faux fur |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Animal hair or skin with hair | Japan: wool-on sheepskin | Shorn sheep/lamb, wool on | Man-made imitation of fur |
| Pile | By animal and finish | Varies | Often short, even | Any length possible |
| Hair & skin | One, except processed | Mostly one | Always one piece | No animal skin |
| Care | Avoid rubbing, heat | Mind both sides | Mind wool and suede side | Follow care label |
| Used checks | Shedding, flattening, skin | Uneven, stiff, stains | Uneven wool, suede wear | Crushed, tangled |
Fur does not mean "long-pile material"; Oxford and Cambridge define it as animal hair or haired skin. Strictly, shearling is sheep or lamb skin shorn once and tanned with the wool on, so mouton and shearling are similar but not identical terms.
Sheepskin has wool on one side, suede on the other; see which faces out to choose well.
Where the fur goes changes a fur bag's look
Look at the area of fur, in three types: all-over, partial and trim.
In photos|Wool placement

All-over|Peekaboo Wool wraps the body, pattern and all. Wintry even from afar. |

Partial|LOEWE Mouton patchwork, one side with leather inserts; leather sides, handles. |

Trim|CHANEL 19 Embroidered suede panels, wool only at the edges: winter as an outline. |
1. All-over fur|The bag as a winter accent
The fur texture is the design; the bag alone feels seasonal. Base and corner wear shows.
2. Partial|Enjoy both leather and fur
Fur only on the front or sides, so it carries like an everyday bag. VINTAGE QOO TOKYO's LOEWE mouton and leather handbag too has mouton only front and back.
3. Trim|Fur as an accent
Only the edges are framed in fur or mouton; the bag's shape leads.
There is no set start date; trim suits early autumn, all-over suits winter. Compare with CHANEL's popular classics.
Fur bags for this winter|All-over fur and mouton trim
From ALAMODE's fur bags, here are two, from most fur to least: the all-over Peekaboo and the CHANEL 19 with mouton only at the edges.
FENDI Peekaboo Mini Zucca shearling
FENDI Peekaboo Mini leather fur brown black 8BN244 Zucca
The Peekaboo is a handbag by Silvia Venturini Fendi for Spring/Summer 2009. This one wraps the body in sheep's wool, drawing the FF Zucca that Karl Lagerfeld created in 1965. FF is said to mean "Fun Fur."
Low-colour outfits like a black turtleneck or grey coat make the pattern stand out. The black handle keeps it from looking too sweet. For a winter look from one bag.
CHANEL 19 suede mouton chain shoulder bag
CHANEL 19 CC chain shoulder bag suede mouton beige white
The CHANEL 19 is a flap bag shown for Fall/Winter 2019 by Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard. This one has beige suede embroidered with white flowers and CC marks, edged only with white mouton.
Beige and white suit an ivory knit, denim or a long brown skirt. With wool only at the edges, it works from early autumn. Right for a light seasonal touch.
Fur bag care and storage
For real fur, avoid heat, hard rubbing and pressure; no hard brushing needed.
If wet, air-dry it in an airy place without a dryer or other heat. Experts also advise no brushing when wet and no direct heat.
Store with nothing on top, away from heat, sun and sealed plastic. Leave bad stains or stiffness to a pro.
4 points to check before buying a pre-owned fur bag
Pre-owned fur bags wear in other places than leather.
✓ Check shedding, thin spots
Corners, the base and handle roots take friction and can thin. Check photos for bare skin showing.
✓ Stiffness, cracks, stains
Dryness and heat can stiffen or crack skin; check mouton's suede for water rings. See leather care in lambskin vs caviar skin.
✓ Odour does not show in photos
Perfume or storage odours may linger; if concerned, ask the store before buying.
✓ Authenticity needs many clues
Stamps, hardware and stitching are clues, but one feature proves nothing. Weigh the store's authentication too.
FAQ
Q. Are mouton and shearling the same?
A. Mouton and shearling are used alike but are not strictly the same. Shearling means sheep or lamb skin shorn once with wool on, so check the material field.
Q. Can I use a fur bag on rainy days?
A. Real fur and shearling are safer kept from getting too wet. If wet, do not rub hard; dry it without heat in an airy place.
Q. Can you tell faux fur from real fur by looks?
A. Faux fur is made to look like real fur, so judging by looks alone can be hard. Checking the material label is the surest way.
Recap
Fur means animal hair or haired skin; mouton, mainly wool-on sheepskin; shearling, shorn sheep or lamb skin with wool.
Beyond the name, decide first: fur all over, or a touch on leather. Pre-owned, check shedding, uneven wool, stiff or stained skin and odour that photos cannot show.
